Move close to the microphone, play one string or note at a time, and let it ring naturally. Tune in small movements. A reading within ±4 cents is highlighted as in tune; for ensemble playing, agree on the same A4 reference before starting.

Does the online tuner work with any instrument?
It is chromatic, so it can identify any steady pitched note between roughly 55 and 1,200 Hz. That covers most string, wind and brass practice ranges.
Is my microphone audio recorded or uploaded?
No. Pitch detection runs locally in your browser. Tone & Tempo does not record, store or upload the microphone audio.
What does cents mean on a tuner?
A cent is one hundredth of a semitone. Zero cents is the target note; a negative value is flat and a positive value is sharp.
Should I use A4 = 440 Hz?
A4 = 440 Hz is the common modern reference. Use 442 Hz only when your ensemble requests it, or another reference for historically informed performance.
